Finally . .
a sunny day! And perfect timing for the kids to enjoy the new play structure, in bathing suits of course. .
Shine on
Guess who got her first shiner yesterday? Little Ms. Chloe.
It was a bit scary actually. She was at day camp at the children's gym and we got a call that she had been hit by a swing. When I went to get her, it was a sight to see. The swing actually got her in the corner of the eye, so not only does she have a goose egg above her eye, but she'll probably end up with a round the whole eye black eye before too long.
I took her to her doctor who checked her out and fortunately while it looks bad, there is no bad news!
She worke up this morning and he eye was swelled shut. . by the afternoon it had opened up a bit. Through it all, she was a very brave trooper!

Annual Teacher Conference
Here's what Chloe's teacher wrote in her annual conference report:
Chloe is a social and inquisitive child who thrives in the school experience. Though she is an active participant in a wide range of activities at school, a few of her favorites are artistic endeavors (drawing, painting, clay, and visiting the studio), dramatic play including family life, princesses and fantasy, and animal play, and writing messages and notes and using her emerging literacy skills.
Though Chloe is very outgoing with familiar people and situations, we still notice that she can be shy or even scared around new teachers or children. She is able to talk about these feelings and come to a resolution, and usually after more exposure
becomes comfortable (with how much she loves the Studio, you would never guess she was initially uncomfortable around Laure and didn’t want to go!). Chloe enjoys
interacting with other children, and even when she is engaged in a solitary activity she is chatting with the adults or children around her. Chloe tends to play in groups (mainly with other girls) and seems to play equally with everyone.
Chloe’s language and literacy skills are developing well: she recognizes and can write her letters, can spell many familiar names, and already knows a few sight words. Though she is one of the younger children in the class, other children seek her out for assistance with letters and numbers. Chloe is always helpful in these situations, and often will offer help when she notices other children struggling.
Chloe is very capable and independent in the classroom, able to put on her own coat and shoes, go to the bathroom without assistance, clean up without direction when she’s done with something, and smoothly make transitions throughout the day (though she does sometimes try to talk the teachers into letting her stay inside if it’s cold or wet out!). Chloe has mastered many fine motor skills such as using utensils, pipettes, fine paint brushes and pens, and is able to bead the smallest beads we have on thin wire. Her gross motor skills are also developing well—she enjoys running, jumping, and climbing, and we have seen her using these skills much more on the playground now that she has become more interested in dramatic play outside.
Goal: We notice the tattling and excessive rule enforcement much less than last year, but now we see a little more bossiness and excluding in her group play (usually on the playground). We are working with Chloe and the other children to be fair and flexible in their play, and to talk about their roles before they begin playing.

Weekly Kid Shot
We thought it would be fun to take a picture of Chloe and Leo each week to see how they grow together. It only took 327 tries (felt like it) to get this shot!
Settling in . .
Leo has really settled into our family life .. and we are settling into his life!
Yesterday we totally exhausted both Chloe and Leo. Morning walks to Starbucks and around the neighborhood, and a sunny afternoon filled with neighbors and friends.
Mark and Carol came over to meet Leo and Chloe's request was for Mark to bring his guitar. So we all sat out on the front lawn singing songs and playing with Leo.
Then Mr. Leo got his first vet visit. He was so tired by then, having not really had his very long naps that he practically fell asleep sitting up. Everyone at the vet loved him and thought he was beautiful.

Puppy Update - one week check in!
Leo has been with us for almost a whole week, though he has wormed his way into our hearts much deeper than that and that is a good thing. And he has bonded very much with us too. He cries if he wakes up on his bed and we have left the room. He comes when we call him and he already knows how to sit. He loves to be carried around and snuggle close.
And I thought I remembered, but I guess you block it out. Puppies are a pain in the patootie! The housebreaking is not the problem, it is the chewing Craig is just now realizing this too. Fortunately, Leo starts puppy classes in the middle of July. It will be much easier when he has more of his shots and we can really start socializing him with other dogs.
Chloe usually loves him, though their relationship is off to somewhat of a rocky start, from Chloe's standpoint anyway.
Leo loves Chloe. She has long flowing hair that is fun to grab. She will squeal and run when he does something she doesn't like. She is fun to chase. And what Chloe has to show for it is a long scratch on her neck and arm. But she is learning. She is learning to grab his color and say "No, Leo". And through all this her pronunciation of the letter "L" has skyrocketed. Though I will miss her calling our friend Liza "Yiza".

Introducing. .
Leo John Black!
Poor Zack, our wonderful friend and companion of almost 11 years died in March. We miss him terribly. . he will never be replaced.
That said, this little guy is already worming his way into our hearts. We just picked him up this afternoon. . he is 8 weeks old. His original name was Huston. We have renamed him Leo.
The naming of the dog was a long long long long process. We made lists, discussed, argued, bartered and finally agreed (or as Craig might say, gave in).
His middle name is in honor of my father in law, John Doom.
Chloe is not quite sure what to make of him. She doesn't want him to nip at her and so she runs away, which Leo loves.
She also keeps asking us, "What is his name again?" And then says Le Le Le Leo as she still isn't able to pronounce her "L"s easily yet.
We're excited to have a 4 legged friend back in the house and wary of what this puppy stage may bring. But at least it is 3 on 1, which is better odds than when I got Zack, or when Chloe was born!
